Finding a unique gift for Father’s Day isn’t easy as an adult.
When you were a kid, the mug with your hand print on it was cute and your dad loved it. But now you’re not five and everyone expects a little more.
Here are a few DIY Father’s Day gifts that you can make as an adult.
1. Tie rack

You’ve probably given your dad ties for as long as you both can remember. Change it up this year and give him something with which he can organize them.
- Grab a board that’s an inch thick and cut it into whatever size you desire. You might want to find out how many ties your dad has first, then you can make sure the rack will be big enough.
- Get a second board that is the same length as the first, but only three inches wide (this will be a ledge where your dad can set things). Note: Most hardware stores will cut the pieces for you if you don’t want to do it yourself.
- Sand the edges on each board and stain the wood your desired color.
- Put wood glue on the top edge of the main board using a small paint brush and put the smaller board on top to create a ledge. Using a nail gun or a plain old hammer, nail the top ledge to the main board to make sure it’s secured properly.
- Hammer a bunch of large nails into the front of the main board. Space them out evenly in rows so dad’s ties don’t end up in a jumbled mess. To create a neat clean finish, spray a thin coat of sealant over everything.
- Attach a couple of sawtooth hangers on to the top corners on the back of the tie rack. This is easily done by just hammering them in. Once they’ve been attached, it’s all ready to give to dad!
2. Beard oil

If your dad is the kind of guy who likes his facial hair, then give him some beard oil to make sure his whiskers are soft and healthy. Plus, it smells great, so what’s not to love?
- In a small glass bottle (one with a dropper works best), add 3 tablespoons of your choice of base oil (argan, jojoba, sweet almond, apricot or castor oil work well).
- Add three drops each of tea tree, lavender and cedarwood essential oils.
- Close the bottle and shake well to mix all of the oils together and that’s it!
3. Wood burned bottle stoppers

These are both useful and look nice when displayed in a liquor cabinet. Dad will love remembering this gift every time he gets a drink.
- Get some wooden knobs or blocks (available at most craft or home improvement stores) and use a pencil to draw a design on each one. You can do the same design on all of them or mix it up by creating a new one each time.
- Fill in the designs with a handheld wood burner (available at most craft stores or online). Remember that it’s difficult to fix a mistake once the wood has been burned, so be careful and take your time!
- Grab a foam paintbrush and a wood stain in the color of your choice. Cover each piece of wood in a coat or two of the stain.
- Apply super glue to the top end of a plain bottle cork and attach one of the wood pieces. Hold it in place for a minute or two until the glue sets, then set it out to dry for a few hours. Repeat the process for each piece of wood and cork, then you’re done!
4. Homemade shaving cream

Instead of using a cheap can of shaving cream from the store, your dad will love using something that’s luxurious and made of natural ingredients.
Warning: Once your dad is hooked, you’ll be making this more than once a year!
- Place a medium-sized pot on the stove on high heat and fill it with a couple of inches of water. Put a glass bowl over the pot (it should be big enough to rest on the edges of the pot) and make sure it isn’t resting in the water (if it is, just dump some of the water out).
- Put 1/2 cup of coconut oil and 1/2 cup of shea butter to the glass bowl. Stir them together until melted.
- Remove the glass bowl from the pot and pour the mixture into a different bowl (one that’s not hot). Add 1/4 cup of olive oil and mix everything together. Place the bowl in the fridge for an hour or so until it has solidified and is no longer a clear liquid.
- Once solid, remove it from the fridge and either use a hand mixer or a standalone mixer to whip the mixture for a few minutes. Add between 15-20 drops of your choice of essential oil (choose something your dad will like — popular ones are eucalyptus or a mixture of rosemary and peppermint). Whip it again for another two or three minutes. Add more oil if you’d like the scent to be stronger and whip again. Repeat until you achieve your desired scent strength.
- Put it into an airtight container, like a small mason jar, and give it to your dad!
5. Comic book coasters

Every man has an inner child. Bring out your dad’s younger side with these fun coasters!
- Get some old comic books you don’t mind destroying or find some pictures online and print them. Cut them into 3.75 inch by 3.75 inch squares.
- Using a paintbrush, spread craft glue onto the back of each picture and center them onto the fronts of 4 inch by 4 inch tiles (found at any hardware store). Smooth the picture onto the tile so there aren’t any air bubbles.
- Cover each tile in a coat of Mod Podge and let it dry.
- Cut felt or cork into 3.75 inch by 3.75 inch squares and use craft glue to attach them to the bottom of each tile. Then, just wait for your dad to be excited about his favorite superhero comic book coasters!
